Risk Assessment
Your employer or the company you work for have a legal duty to consider in advance all the various operations and procedures that you may encounter in the workplace. All activities must be assessed and efforts made, where reasonably practicable, to reduce any perceived risk. Employers that shirk this legal duty are putting their staff in danger and any resultant injury will give rise to an accident at work claim that is likely to succeed.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the fundamental statute that deals with safety in the workplace. This legislation has done more than any other to reduce accident at work claims.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations
In addition to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 there is other more specific legislation in force including the manual handling operations regulations that deal with the safety issues of moving objects physically from one place to another in the workplace. In general, manual handling should be kept to a minimum. If you have been injured in an accident due to manual handling which could otherwise have been carried out by machinery, then you are in a good position to make an accident at work claim for compensation.

Occupational Hearing Loss
Excessive noise is also a serious concern in the work place. You have a right not be subjected to high levels of noise. Proper ear protection must be available to avoid noise related injury and occupational hearing loss. Employers are expected to display warning signs in noisy areas and should enforce the wearing of ear protectors, upon threat of dismissal, where necessary.

Miscellaneous Provisions
Ventilation, lighting, heating, your workstation and many other basic issues must all be properly addressed and assessed for risk. Thereafter an employer is under a duty to take reasonable steps to minimise risk in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
