AMPUTUATION INJURY COMPENSATION CLAIM

Traumatic amputation can rank as a catastrophic injury and attract a substantial award of compensation. If the accident was caused by the negligence of another person you should take advice from a solicitor about starting an amputation injury compensation claim. In addition to the loss of a body part, amputees face other health risks and side-effects. Shock is one of the most serious complications a victim faces immediately after suffering a non-surgical amputation. Shock occurs when the body is not receiving enough blood. There is a risk of permanent damage to internal organs and shock can be fatal. Symptoms of shock include :-

  • extremely low blood pressure
  • weak pulse
  • excessive sweating
  • confusion
  • chest pain
  • shallow breathing
  • loss of consciousness
  • pale, clammy skin
  • dizziness

Pain & Suffering

Amputations also cause the victim or patient a great deal of pain. The pain can be acute or persistent. Acute pain is severe, but it lasts a short time. It is the pain we experience immediately following an injury. Most of the time acute pain goes away once the injury is healed. Persistent pain is long-term and can lasts for years. A symptom unique to amputees is "phantom pain" or "phantom sensation." This phenomenon causes the amputee to feel the limb that is no longer there. They may experience feelings such as pain, numbness or tingling as if the body part was still present. Damages for pain and suffering is one of the items that can awarded in an amputation injury compensation claim.

Emotional and Psychological Symptoms

In addition to physical symptoms, amputees often face emotional and psychological difficulties. An amputee may feel very self-conscious about their appearance, causing them to avoid interactions with other people. It can affect their relationships and their desire for intimacy. The victim may also go through a mourning period similar to grieving for a loved one. The patient's treatment plan and rehabilitation should always include emotional support and therapy to help the victim overcome these difficulties. Damages for psychological injury is another item that can awarded in an amputation injury compensation claim.

Reattachment

In many cases there is a chance that the amputated body part can be surgically reattached. To increase the odds of a successful reattachment, the severed body part should be wrapped in a clean, damp cloth. It should then be placed in a tightly sealed plastic bag and stored in ice water. Keep the body part stored in this manner until the victim and the body part are safely delivered to a hospital.
