Mesothelioma Claim
Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma which is a serious but rare form of cancer in which malignant cells develop in the abdomen or in the chest. As the disease develops it usually progresses to lymph nodes and may also affect the heart, the chest wall, the diaphragm and a range of other organs and tissues. This aggressive cancer is classified as `dose responsive', meaning that a person is more likely to develop it, the longer they have been exposed to asbestos fibres. Victims may have been exposed to asbestos many years before the cancer develops. The average latency period between exposure and diagnosis is 30 years.

Asbestosis Claim
Asbestosis is not cancerous, but is a troublesome and sometimes fatal disease. It is caused by asbestos fibres becoming lodged in the lungs which create scar tissue affecting the lung's oxygen capacity. The symptoms progress over time and may cause severe shortness of breath, tiredness, chest pain and heart problems. Asbestosis usually occurs more than ten years after exposure to asbestos fibres. The extent of exposure affects the probability of suffering from the disease. There is no treatment or cure for asbestosis.

Pleural Plaques
Exposure to asbestos fibres may also cause pleural plaques, a non-cancerous condition in which the thin membranes lining the chest cavity become scarred. Pleural plaques refers to localised thickening of the lung's lining, while `diffuse pleural thickening' refers to broader thickening.
