Exposure to this mineral can cause mesothelioma which is a very serious but also very rare form of
cancer in which malignant cells develop in the abdomen or lining of the chest. After
exposure to asbestos, which can be very brief, the cancer develops and progresses beyond
the chest lining to lymph nodes and may also affect the heart, chest wall, the diaphragm,
and a range of other organs and tissues. This aggressive cancer is classified as `dose
responsive', meaning that a person is more likely to develop it, the longer they have been
exposed to its cause. Victims may have been exposed to asbestos many years
before the cancer develops. The average time period is 30 years, although cases may also
arise between fifteen years or over forty years after exposure. Our mesothelioma solicitor experts have great experience in dealing with this type of claim.
Asbestosis is not cancerous, but is still a very troublesome and sometimes fatal disease. It is caused by
fibres becoming lodged in the lungs which create scar tissue affecting the lung's capacity
for oxygen. Its symptoms progress over time, and tend to cause severe shortness of breath,
tiredness, chest pain, and may cause heart problems in the long-term. Like mesothelioma it tends to occur many years after exposure to asbestos,
often after 15 years or more. The extent of exposure affects the probability
that someone is likely to contract the disease. There is no treatment
or cure for the disease.
Exposure to these fibres may also cause pleural plaques, a non-cancerous condition in which
the thin membranes lining the chest cavity scar over. Pleural plaques refers to localised
thickening of the lung's lining, while `diffuse pleural thickening' refers to broader
thickening.
