WINTER DRIVING PRECAUTIONS
Tyres
The condition of your tyres is critical to safe driving during the winter months. In all EU nations, the law sets forth a minimum tread depth for tyres. To be in compliance with the law, your tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.66mm. Another precaution to take is to make sure that your tires are fully and properly inflated.
Windscreen Wipers
Properly functioning windscreen wipers are critical to optimal visibility while on the road. They are your only means for safely cleaning your windsreen while operating a motor vehicle. Wipers that have become worn out do not fully clean the windshield, instead leaving streaks behind. These streaks can impair your ability to see the road.
Also, be sure that you are using the correct type of windscreen washer fluid and that you have mixed it with the correct amount of water. Otherwise, there is a chance that the washer fluid could freeze on your windscreen. Frozen washer fluid will severely limit your ability to see and is virtually impossible to deal with while you are driving. Poor visibility is one of the major causes of motor vehicle accidents.
Lights
All of your vehicle's lights should be in working condition, including brake lights, headlights, tail lights and turn signal indicators. Another way to stay safe is to keep the surfaces of the lights clean. Wipe them down regularly, particularly if they have been covered in snow.
Anti-Freeze
Mixing the right amount of anti-freeze and water is very important. If not mixed in sufficient concentration the anti-freeze will not prevent water from freezing at low temperatures.
Fog
On especially foggy days, turn on your headlights even during the daytime. The light will help you see better, and it will also help other vehicles see you. Turn on your fog lamps and high intensity rear lights when the fog is at its worst. Keeping assured clear distance can help prevent car accidents if you are having difficulty seeing the vehicles in front of you.
Snow
Driving in the snow requires a particularly high level of care. In snowy conditions, always avoid sudden turns and sudden braking. Reduce your speed to account for the slippery roads and the increased braking distance. Never exceed the speed limit.
