ACCIDENTS INVOLVING YOUNG DRIVERS
Young Drivers
When speaking of "young drivers," most people are referring to the age group of roughly 17 to 25 years old. This age group is typically considered to be made up of drivers who are less skilled and less safe behind the wheel. While many young drivers are highly capable and responsible, there are others who are a danger to fellow travellers. Research has shown that drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 make up approximately one third of all driver deaths.
Educating Young Drivers
Local governments are taking steps to help ensure that young drivers stay safe and drive with care. In many areas, law enforcement and local authorities have teamed up to provide training courses and driver education classes. The courses are enhanced by guest speakers such as local magistrates, Driving Standards Agency (DSA) driving examiners and individuals from the Ambulance and Probation service. A wide range of driving-related topics are covered. The courses even include discussions on subjects such as advice on purchasing your first car. To obtain more information about these types of young driver education courses, start by contacting your Local Authority Road Safety Officer.
Tips for Safe Driving
Drivers of all ages can stay safe on the roads by obeying the law and using common sense :-
- never drink and drive
- do not drive when you are fatigued or after you have taken medication that can cause drowsiness
- always wear your seatbelt and make sure children are secured by appropriate child restraints
- follow the speed limit
- keep your car in good running condition
- obey traffic signals and road signs
- be courteous to other drivers
Special Rules
Individuals who passed their driving test after the day of June 1, 1997 and held only a provisional licence prior to passing the test are subject to special rules. If you commit six or more driving offences (consequently earning six or more points) within the first two years of passing the driving test, then your licence will be revoked. Note that offences committed prior to passing the driving test also count towards this limit. The driver must obtain a provisional licence and pass both sections of the driving test again.
