The Criminal Injury Compensation Board is responsible for administering a fund which pays compensation to the victims of violent crime for mental trauma, physical injuries and financial losses stemming from those injuries. The degree of the trauma and the injury sustained will be used to determine the settlement value on a tarif band basis. Any injury sustained that makes it necessary to visit a doctor at least twice and carries a minimum recovery period of at least 6 weeks will qualify for an award.

The CICB will take into account, among other things, the victim's behaviour preceding, during and following the incident. Also any prior convictions for violent offences which are unspent will be taken into account. Even if the assailant is not convicted of any violent crime, an award may still be made. In cases of family violence, compensation will only be awarded providing the guilty party does not benefit from such compensation.
