Accidents involving bicycles kill over 100 people a year, usually
as a result of collision with a motor vehicle. The available cycle accident claim statistics show that :-
- the highest proportion of deaths occur in Summer
- 50% of fatalities occur in mid-afternoon or in the early evening
- males are substantially more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than are females
- accidents tend to occur near to the cyclist's home and frequently on driveways or pavements
- injuries to the head can be reduced by wearing a helmet
- most bike riders do not wear a helmet, in spite of its crucial role in preventing brain injury
Road junctions are particularly dangerous for cyclists. About a third of fatalities and
serious injuries involving bicycle accidents occur at junctions, when, for example :-
- a cyclist and a motorist intend to go straight on simultaneously, and are at a right angle to one another
- a cyclist is turning right across traffic
- a motorist emerges from a side road or driveway into the path of a cycle
- after having overtaken the cyclist, or when travelling in the opposite direction,
the motorist turns in the path of the cyclist
- a cyclist rides out from a driveway, side exit or rides off the pavement into the
path of a motorist
- a cyclist attempts to overtake another vehicle, particularly a parked car, and is
hit from behind
Our specialist personal injury solicitors can help you make a cycle accident claim even if you were partially to blame. There are numerous circumstances in
which you can make a claim, such as:
- collide with a motor vehicle
- an incident where in order to avoid collision with another road user, you lose control of
the cycle or fall off it
- an accident in which defective road surfaces were partly to blame. Potholes,
obstructions, cracks, even excess gravel may all give rise to damages if it can be shown
that those responsible for the road knew of its defects and failed to repair them, or
failed to adequately inspect it, leading to insufficient maintenance.
- an incident in which you were injured as a consequence of leakage or spillage on the
road surface, and the party responsible can be identified
If you have been injured in an accident within the last three years, do yourself justice and complete the contact form and we will immediately put you in touch with a specialist solicitor. If after talking to that solicitor you decide to proceed no further you will not be charged for any advice.
