Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by trauma to the head that may include complications such as hypoxemia, hypotension and intracerebral haemotoma. There are seceral categories of TBI :-
- Closed head injury - usually occurs as a consequence of rapid acceleration or deceleration of the head. Injuries of this form may cause widespread trauma, yet visible damage to the skin or wounding is not evident.
- Open head injury - occurs when the brain is exposed and damaged. When the damage is isolated to a specific area of the brain, recovery chances are usually positive.
- Crush injury. This is the least common type of injury, and involves damage to the
base of the skull and the nerves of the brain, not the brain itself. People afflicted with
this form of injury may not lose consciousness.
Symptoms that appear in adults with TBI include :-
- problems with cognitive or mental tasks
- recurring head or neck pain
- lethargy in though, speech, or reading
- fatigue, and a lack of energy and motivation
- confusion, and getting lost
- changed sleep patterns, light-headedness, and loss of balance
- blurred eyesight and fatigued eyes
- increased responsiveness to noise or light
- loss of smell or loss of taste
- unpredictable, unsteady mood changes
- ringing ears
Symptoms that appear in children with TBI include :-
- Irritability
- Changed sleep patterns
- Listlessness and lack of interest
- Changed eating habits
- Changed performance at school
