Child Injured by Parents in a Car Accident
If an injured child was hurt in a car accident caused by someone else's negligence our personal injury solicitors can take action to claim compensation. It often happens that one of the injured child's parents was the person who acted in a negligent or reckless manner particularly in car accidents and in this case a compensation claim can be brought against the negligent parent by someone acting on the minor's behalf. The close relationship is irrelevant so far as the law of negligence is concerned and insurers will still payout damages to an injured child passenger even though one of the childs parents was responsible for causing the accident
CHILDRENS SAFETY INFORMATION
Keeping Child Passengers Safe
Child passengers are highly vulnerable to serious injuries if they are involved in a car accident. Their bodies are more fragile than that of an adult. Driving a car with child passengers inside should be looked at as an increased responsibility in the driver's duty to stay safe on the road. Added precautions must be taken in order to ensure a safe trip. Riding with children in the car should be taken seriously, no matter how short the trip.
Seatbelts and Car Seats
First and foremost, children should always ride in an age-appropriate car seat or, if they are older, secured with a safety belt. Parents are sometimes tempted to let their child ride without wearing a seatbelt. They feel that their child will complain less if they're not restrained. Letting a child ride in a car without proper restraints is an enormous risk and it's also illegal. Children, as will be explained in more detail below, can be entertained in the car in responsible, non-dangerous ways. A few simple steps can ensure good behaviour without putting the child at grave risk.
Tips for Traveling with Children
Bring along small, quiet toys, books and snacks. These items will keep your child entertained, making them less likely to distract you from your driving. It is important that you keep these items easily within your child's reach. Otherwise, they will ask you to retrieve the items for them, which would require you to take your eyes off the road. The child may even try to get out of their seatbelt or car seat to reach the item.
Children need more rest stops than adults. Without a chance to get out of the car and move around, the child will become restless. Also keep in mind that children need to use the restroom more frequently than adults. A sufficient number of breaks will make the trip much more enjoyable for everyone.
Maintaining Your Vehicle
A well-maintained vehicle is another critical component of a safe trip. Schedule routine maintenance check-ups as a preventative measure. Other simple ways to keep your car in tip-top shape include making sure the tires are properly inflated, checking the levels of your car's fluids (such as oil and transmission fluids) and checking to see if all of your car's lights are in working order.
