Motorcycle Training Certificate
Compulsory Basic Training
Anyone who wishes to drive a two-wheel vehicle must first obtain a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Certificate. The only exemption from this requirement applies to those who are operating the vehicle on the road as part of an approved CBT course. A CBT certificate is valid for three years.
Obtaining a CBT certificate is extremely important. If you are caught driving a moped or motor bike without a CBT certificate, your licence will be revoked. Note that a CBT certificate is required even if you are just driving the motorcycle on your own property.
Types of Motorcycle and Moped Licences
Full Car Licence
Individuals with a full car licence are not required to take a CBT. They can also ride a moped without L-Plates. A full car licence functions as a provisional motorcycle licence, allowing for the use of motorcycles with L-plates with the exception of riding on motorways or with pillion passengers.
Provisional Moped Licence
With a provisional moped licence, people aged 16 years and older are allowed to drive a moped on the road using L-plates. However, a provisional moped licence does not enable you to drive on motorways or carry pillion passengers. Also, the licence is not valid until you have passed a CBT course and obtained a CBT certificate. The CBT certificate can also be used to operate motorcycles for provisional motorcycle licence holders who are aged 17 years and older.
Full Moped Licence
A full moped licence can be obtained by individuals aged 17 years and older who have previously held a provisional moped licence. The full moped licence has the added benefit of functioning as a provisional motorcycle licence.
Provisional Motorcycle Licence
In order to obtain a provisional motorcycle licence you must be at least 17 years old. A provisional motorcycle licence entitles you to operate a moped and/or learner motorcycle, but it does require the use of L-Plates. Holding a provisional motorcycle licence does not grant you permission to ride on motorways or carry pillion passengers. Provisional motorcycle licences expire after two years, so the driver needs to pass the motorcycle driving test within that time or else they will not be allowed to ride a motorcycle for a year. They will, however, still be allowed to use a moped.
