ELDERLY DRIVERS
Older Drivers
Many stereotypes exist about older drivers. The elderly must cope with physical conditions that make driving more challenging, such as limited range of motion, impaired vision and slowed reaction times. However, the fact is that older drivers are statistically less likely to be involved in a car accident. This is especially true when you compare the accident rates of drivers aged 74 and up to drivers between the ages of 21 and 24.
The same study, which was conducted by the Department of Transport, showed that drivers between the ages of 17 and 21 have twice as many accidents as those who are 74 and older. The safety of older drivers is further bolstered by car insurance companies. Overall, older drivers pay much lower insurance premiums than younger drivers.
Restrictions on Older Drivers
In the United Kingdom, there is no maximum age limit in place for obtaining a driver's licence. The only requirement related to older drivers is that people 70 years and older must prove that they are medically fit to drive a car. To that end, they are required to sign a form declaring that fact to be true. The final decision rests with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
Utilising Public Transportation
Drivers who are concerned that they are no longer capable of safely operating a motor vehicle can choose public transportation as an alternative. In fact, if you do not drive more than 4,000 miles each year, relying on public transportation and taxis is more economical.
