Repetitive Strain Injury

Exactly what is repetitive strain injury? RSI is an umbrella term which refers to a range of musculoskeletal injuries that are also known as Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs), Work-Related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULDs) and Occupational Overuse Injuries. These conditions tend to occur as a result of practices in use at the workplace and may cause substantial pain, suffering and inconvenience. There are numerous conditions which may contribute to RSI including :-

  • epicondylitis (tennis / golfer's elbow)
  • bursitis
  • ganglion cyst
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • peritendinitis
  • cervical spondylosis
  • rotator cuff syndrome
  • writers' cramp

  • trigger Finger / thumb

Symptoms

Repetitive strain injury can occur in several locations within the body including the spine and lower and upper limbs. RSI symptoms include numbness, tingling, sharp or dull pain, weakness or poor grip, and limited movement of the limbs. The consequences of suffering from RSI is that the individual may be unable to conduct simple tasks which affects lifestyle and wellbeing both at home and at work.

Health & Safety

Employers should closely monitor the health and welfare of employees. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations require that health and safety risks are identified, evaluated and that appropriate action to avert repetitive strain injury is undertaken. Employees should receive adequate health and safety training upon taking up employment and also where there is a pertinent change in working practices, systems, technology or responsibilities. Employers who fail to fulfil their legal obligations may, in the event of an employee suffering from RSI due to their negligence, be liable to pay compensation.

Serious Problem

RSI remains a serious issue. The British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has suggested that over 500,000 workers in Britain suffer from painful neck or upper limb disorders due to RSI sustained whilst in the workplace and recent research has suggested that this figure may underestimate the extent of the problem. The TUC has said that at least one in fifty workers has repetitive strain injury symptoms causing pain and immobility across numerous areas of the body including joints, nerves and muscles.
