Speed Camera Legislation - Speeding Accidents

Legislation governs the proper location and visibility of speed cameras. Speed cameras cannot be placed just anywhere. The law specifically limits cameras to areas proven dangerous due to a certain number of deaths and injuries. A speed camera may be placed in a location where four or more people have been killed or seriously injured within the past three years. Also, a camera may be placed in a location where at least 8 personal injury accidents have occurred within the past three years within a distance of 500 metres on either side of the camera.

Speed cameras must be painted yellow so as to increase their visibility. They cannot be blocked from a motorist's view by bridges, road signs, trees or other foliage. On a road with a speed limit of 40 mph, the camera must be visible from a distance of 60m. On all other roads, speed cameras must be clearly visible from 100m. Additionally, the law requires that warning signs be placed at a distance of 1km from each camera. An individual operating a mobile camera must wear fluorescent clothing. Sites of speed cameras are examined every six months to ensure compliance.

Information About Speed Cameras - Speeding Law

The Association of British Drivers provides information about the location and operation of speed cameras that have been installed throughout the United Kingdom. Additional information can be found by visiting many Local Authority websites. As explained above, there are requirements that the authorities must follow with regard to speed cameras. If these requirements have not been met, then a motorist may be able to contest their speeding charge. An RTA solicitor can help determine if you have a basis for successfully challenging the charge.

Drinking and Driving

Administering breathalyser tests to drivers involved in traffic accidents is now routine. Drinking and driving is a growing problem, and the law is coming down hard on those who drive while intoxicated. Getting caught driving drunk can result in fines, jail time and revocation of your driver's licence.

Handheld Telephone Prohibition

To combat the dangers of people driving while talking on mobile phones, legislation was passed in 2003 making it illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless you have a hands-free setup. Installing a phone cradle on your dashboard can help ensure that you do not touch your mobile phone while driving.
