Traumatic Brain Injury Categories

Diffuse Axonal Injury ~ A diffuse axonal injury is the type of brain injury commonly associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome. It can also be caused by severe whiplash. A strong shake or rotational force moves the skull, but the brain does not move simultaneously. Nerve tissue is torn because the skull is moving more quickly than the brain, causing it to pull away. Extensive tearing of nerve tissue in the brain can have grave consequences for the victim. The victim may experience functional impairments, suffer permanent brain damage or lapse into a coma. Diffuse axonal injuries can also be fatal.

Concussion ~ Concussions are the most common type of traumatic brain injuries. A concussion is caused by trauma to the brain because of a direct impact, sudden movement or violent shake. Those suffering from a concussion will often lose consciousness for a brief period of time or experience dizziness. Possible physical consequences of severe concussions include stretching of blood vessels, nerve damage, swelling, skull fracture, brain bleeding and blood clots.

Contusion ~ A contusion is a bruise on the brain caused by bleeding of the brain. Contusions are often the result of a direct blow or impact to the victim's head. In some cases, a large contusion may require surgical removal.

Penetration Injury ~ Penetration injuries occur when the impact of an object causes skin, bone fragments or the object itself to enter the brain. An example of a penetration injury is a gunshot wound to the head. A penetration injury is considered a "through-and-through" if the object penetrates the skull, travels through the brain and then exits the skull on the other side. A through-and-through causes additional injuries, including the stretching and rupture of brain tissue.

Coup-Contrecoup Injury ~ With a coup-contrecoup injury, the victim has two contusions on their brain – one at the site of impact and the other on the opposite side of the brain. A coup-contrecoup injury occurs when the impact is so strong that it causes the brain to slam into the opposite side of the skull.

Acquired Brain Injury ~ Like a traumatic brain injury, an acquired brain injury is not a hereditary condition, congenital disorder or the result of trauma during birth. It is damage to the brain that occurs at the cellular level. The effects of the injury, therefore, can impair the entire brain, not just the area where the injury occurred, as is the case with traumatic brain injury.

Lack of oxygen and inadequate blood flow to the brain are two of the most common causes of acquired brain injury. As a result of an acquired brain injury, the victim may experience various cognitive impairments such as difficulty communicating, memory loss, poor attention span, inability to concentrate and impaired thinking and reasoning. Muscle movement disorders and severe mood swings are other symptoms of an acquired brain injury:

Circumstances that can lead to acquired brain injuries include :-

      • electrical shock
      • stroke
      • heart attack
      • exposure to toxins
      • airway obstruction ~ drowning, strangulation or choking
      • infectious disease
      • drug abuse
      • crushing injury to the chest
      • intracranial tumors
      • metabolic disorders
